Freedom Fighter Sohan Lal Jangid

A Legacy of Struggle, Service and Dedication

Birth and Family Background

Freedom fighter Shri Sohan Lal Jangid was born in 1914 in Sadalpur village, Hisar district, Haryana. His father was Shri Shankar Lal Jangid, and his mother was Smt. Krishna Devi. His elder brother was Shri Banwari Lal Suthar.

He received education in Hindi up to the primary level. After completing his primary education, he joined his father in their traditional carpentry profession, beginning his working life through the family occupation.

Marriage and Family Life

In 1930, he married Smt. Hardai Devi. Their family life was based on simplicity and strong social values. They had one son and three daughters.

Entry into the Freedom Movement

In 1936, inspired by the ideas and nationalist spirit of the then Member of Parliament and renowned patriotic monk Swami Brahmanand Ji, as well as the distinguished cow welfare activist Lala Hardev Sahay Ji, he became associated with the national movement.

He joined the Indian National Congress and actively participated in the movements launched for India's independence.

He took part in various movements and Satyagrahas against British rule. During 1940–41, he was arrested by the British government. He was first sent to Hisar Jail and later to Firozpur Jail.

A Skill Learned in Prison Put to the Service of the Nation

While in prison, he received training related to the manufacturing of weapons. After his release, he contributed to the freedom movement by making weapons, rifles and guns for the Satyagrahis associated with the independence struggle.

Because of his involvement in such activities against British rule, he was declared a “Das Nambari” offender by the British authorities. This became an important chapter in his life, reflecting his courage and resistance against colonial rule.

Contribution to Village Security During Partition

During the difficult period of the Partition of India and Pakistan, Shri Sohan Lal Jangid also played an important role in protecting his village. He was among the key members of the Village Defence Committee.

It is said that, at that time, weapons were made from brass utensils collected from the villagers' homes, and even a cannon was reportedly constructed for the defence of the village. He used his technical skills and experience in these efforts to help protect the people of Sadalpur.

Bhoodan Movement and Social Service

His commitment to society did not end with India's independence. In 1951, he actively participated in Acharya Vinoba Bhave's Bhoodan Movement. With the objective of helping landless families, he also donated a portion of his privately owned agricultural land.

After independence, he continued to live in his village and started operating a flour mill. Alongside his livelihood, he remained actively involved in social work and contributed to various welfare activities for the village and society.

Honours and Memorials

In recognition of his contribution to India's freedom struggle, the Government of India honoured him with a Tamra Patra in 1971.

His contribution to the nation and society continues to be remembered in Sadalpur village. His name is also mentioned on the village Gaurav Patta (Honour Plaque). His name is also inscribed on a memorial plaque established by the Government of India at the government school in the village.

In recognition of his contribution to the Indian freedom movement, the Haryana Government has also associated his name with the government senior secondary school in the village. The school is presently known as “Swatantrata Senani Sohan Lal P.M. Shri Government Model Sanskriti Senior Secondary School.”

Final Years and Legacy

Shri Sohan Lal Jangid passed away on 7 August 1992. After his death, in 1997, the Haryana Government honoured him for his contribution to the freedom struggle by presenting a Tamra Patra, which was handed over to his family.

The life of Sohan Lal Jangid was not limited to the freedom movement alone. He contributed to the struggle for independence, village security, the Bhoodan Movement, social service and public welfare.
